For comparison, here are some single shots (ie not focus stacked) taken with a D90 and a Tamron 90mm macro with a Kenko 1.4TC and 48mm of tubes to give about 2.5:1.

As you can see, there is more detail in these shots, the facets of the eyes are clearly visible.

Diffused flash (SB600) used, necessary at the small apertures needed to get some DOF.
