I had a similar experience, but with center AF point

Take a look at this post I made a few days ago.

It shows a similar issue. In particular, I was attempting to determine if my new Tamron 70-200 needed any AF fine tuning. I shot 3 ways. Normal phase detect AF, Live View contrast detect AF and Live View manual focus with the image enlarged for critical focus.

As you can see from the images, the phase detect AF and Live View manual focus pretty much nailed the focus while the Live View AF was off quite a bit. These results were also highly repeatable. While I posted one set of examples, I shot 3 versions of each test and had the camera refocus between each shot.

I have not investigated further due to limited time and the fact that I probably won't use Live View AF often.

Nonetheless, it is qutie strange.
