If your going to do AF MA then first you need something the AF system can't get wrong. Shooting a high contrast sharp target lets the system, lock on the traget without question.

Next you need a scale along side of the target at a slope so you can see where the lens actually focused.

Then you need to determine what you want for a DOF pattern. Normally 20% of the DOF window is placed in front an 80% behind. You may have shooting needs that are different than that and here is where they get implemented.

Now adjust the AF MA so the lens does what you want.

And be sure your are using RAW images to judge the image sharpness, everything else is processed, so new firmware could alter or clear JPEG sharpness settings.
