Meteor Shower, why large aperture?

Did some research today about the Perseid meteor shower and how to best photograph it. Two things seem universal. First, use a wide lens. That I understand. But the second one seems a bit of mystery to me and that is that they recommend staying within 1/2 to one stop of the largest aperture available. Ideas and reasons are helpful to this old guy!?
