Unless you have a particular need, it doesn't matter....

One has better lenses in one area, the other has better in another area.

When I bought my first DSLR, I tried holding the cheap Canon and the Nikon D70 - the Canon didn't fit my hands, so I bought the Nikon.

In the end, it really doesn't matter which one you buy. The best DSLR for newbies at present is the D3200. A year from now, it may be a Canon.

The 14-24 from Nikon cannot be beat, and Canon has nothing to compare, but it's a large hunk of glass and very expensive. Canon has a couple of f/4 lenses that are good and inexpensive - I prefer the wider aperture on all my lenses because I can see and focus more easily, so that Canon benefit doesn't matter to me.
