No, it does not really compete with professional FF f/2.8 zooms. It competes with APS-C zooms though, and Sony DT 16-50/2.8 can be had for $618 (or less in a kit).

You keep listing that one example that proves your point while ignoring the other 10 examples that don't. Canon's 17-55 IS goes for about $1100. Nikon's 17-55 goes for $1400. Pentax 16-50 is $900. The newest 24-70's for Full frame go for close to $2k these days. Panasonic is probably milking it a little bit, but premium lenses are often premium priced.
