What is a better deal?
Aug 10, 2012

I already have a 50D + grip and a decent set of lenses: Canon – 300 f4 L IS, 70-200 f4 L IS, 100 macro and Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6, 17-70 f2.8-4 OS and a Kenko 1.4x DGX. I know someone will say spend more on lenses but I have the set I need.

What I need is another body to mount a second lens to. What I have is a new baby and little money for the next year or more. I can get a decent used 50D for about $500-550 or a decent 40D for $300-325. What do you think is a better deal? I could stretch for the extra $200 or so but I’m not sure I should. The in testing the 2 camera a few years ago the 15MP of the 50d does not offer much extra resolution compared to the 40D only 10-15% more in the linear direction. As long as it focus well I do not think I would miss the micro adjust, but what about other features: screen resolution, live view, etc.

My plan was to use the 40D + grip in one bag with the 300, 70-200 and 1.4x for wildlife and the 50D and the macro, 17-70 and 10-20 as my landscape/macro set-up.
