I thought it was the half-white half-black circle button but this image suggests that it is the folder icon... Regardless, adjustment layer is the term I was looking for. Not only does this give you easy access to an alpha layer (if I remember correctly) but it also makes it easy to modify the adjustment later. Unlike regular adjustment application you can apply and unapply as well as change settings and the alpha channel (selection mask, effectively) without having to undo back to the point where you applied the effect. If I had access to Photoshop right now, I'd do it myself to make sure, but at least that's what I remember from 5 years ago or whatever...
