Well, the official response, if you can call it that, seems to be to ship them out as they are and frustrate you. A certain percentage of people genuinely won't know, and a certain percentage may give up. Some bean counter has probably worked out that this is the least costly way to deal with it.

The dealers I know are genuinely sorry about the situation but they can't do anything about it.

If Nikon would supply parts to a pro shop that would service our hardware, I wouldn't mind (not that we should have to) having someone else fix it.

It sucks. Big time.
