External HD unreliability...another one gone...
Aug 9, 2012

I have just experienced yet another external HD failure. That is the 5th failure I've had in about 4 years. An Astone 1Tb with WD disc & portable WD 320gig in just this last 2 weeks alone. Bloody hopeless!

I have become very, very disappointed by the level of unreliability of these devices. (WD seems to have been my biggest failure brand). I have gone from 2nd backup to now considering 3rd backups because I simply do not trust this means of storage at all. In my view this is the greatest drawback of the digital format. I fear for long term archival and storage. They are not a bulls roar as secure as negatives that's for sure. As storage to cloud on my limited satellite is out of the question (about 8 gigs allowance a month for $50) with my approx 10 Tbs of data (work it out... lots of $$$$ and time) I'm somewhat stymied about what I ought to do now. Any bright ideas out there? Denisio

PS: This is with careful handling as well!
