Sony is done with the A77. If you bought one, be happy with what you have now because Sony will not improve it beyond what it is now. That is how they keep us in this continual hardware upgrade cycle.

Perhaps...but we don't know for sure, do we? But it does seem like firmware upgrades from Sony for anything except bug fixes is unlikely, and bugfixes only happen when people raise a firestorm about issues.

Canon has made one move against that 'bugfixes only' rule - they released a firmware upgrade for the 7D with major improvements about three years after the camera was first released. Perhaps other manufacturers will take note.

However, there are several interpretations of Canon's firmware upgrade. One is that Canon wants to support existing 7D users and draw more customers by proving that they'll continue to support and improve products far after the release date. Another is that Canon for some reason doesn't have a viable replacement for the 7D coming up, and the firmware upgrade is a stopgap measure to keep the 7D competitive against Nikon's D7000. I would like to believe the first explanation....
