If that's important to you, it seems to be that Tamron AF piezoelectric motor is much more silent.
Tammy 18270 users, opinion please?

I recently purchased the Tamron, choosing it over the Sony mainly for this reason. I can say the focusing is pretty quiet, though not as quiet as the SSM motor on the higher end Sony lenses. If you're filming a quiet room, you'll hear the focus, but if there's a normal amount of ambient or subject noise, you probably won't notice it.

It's a great lens for video, and I've been very impressed with the still picture quality as well. Of course, you'll need a flash for indoors unless you want high ISO, though (that's true for the Sony version as well).
