While waiting for your replacement 650D/T4i (sorry!), I have some reassurance to give regarding Tamron's performance paired with the T4i/650D; I just compared a T4i/650D Live View shot taken with a new Tamron -- not the 70-300 VC, but a 17-50 VC -- at slow shutter speed, 1/25 sec. , to a "regular" AF 1/25 sec shot (same camera/lens, both at f/2.8, 50mm), and the Tamron executed beautifully with the T4i/650D's Live View AF, better than regular AF in this comparison, part of my unscientific lens assessment: hand held casual shots of my usual testing subject, the dog.

Note: As Yogi pointed out (in another thread), the regular AF shot (AI Servo, Center Pt) looked rather soft (straight conversion from raw w/o further pp), but I put up a T4i 100 % crop to show slow shutter speed lens performance, and was very impressed with target sharpness overall at typical size (also shown in that thread - http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1029&message=42193202 )

Live View performance with this combo turned out even better (again, hand held, slow shutter speed ) :

My other lenses are Canon's 70-200 f/4L IS, 85 f1.8, and a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8.

I hope this information is helpful.

I would suggest you immediately read the articles on AF by Roger Cicala:

Yeah, I had already seen that article, and it made me happy with my choice of the 650D : -)

Less happy I got just now, when the camera arrived; it was of the models with the faulty rubber grip. Had read that Amazon wouldn't ship those out, but that is apparently only true for US Amazon (or at least not true for amazon.de). So it will now be some time before I get to actually play around with the camera. Had been eagerly awaiting to try it out next week in the Austrian Alps. Well, shít happens.
