At left (A) is the levels dialog that opens for destructive editing of image pixels. At right (B) is the dialog that open on a non-destructive levels adjustment layer.

Explain, please, how A is quicker than B. While you're at it, explain how destructive painting over image pixels is faster than non-destructive painting on a blank layer (aside from the 1/10th second it takes to click the new-layer icon).

Never mind masking. Your mind is obviously closed to that option. Just tell us how destructive editing is faster than non-destructive editing.
