This is just wrong. Look at a dof calculator. Using 45mm at 10ft as an example. At f/1.8 dof is a little under 1 ft, more than enough to get a single face in focus. If your subject is a tight cluster of two or three people you're probably better off with f/4 and dof of a little under 2 ft. At f/8, dof is a little under 4ft. 1 foot vs. 4 ft equals big difference.
