Nikon and Thom Hogan say we are using the wrong test pattern

To test our AF on the D800. It seems Thom Hogan finally jumped on the horizontal line bandwagon as well. The claim is the outer focus points work best with black and white horizontal lines. So, by design, the outer points should never be used in the real world unless your subject has horizontal B&W lines. I don't understand why people try to use a feature on the camera that it was not designed for. Why do people insist on pushing this nonsense by not using real world test subjects? Why do they feel the AF is bad when it is not? Sorry, flat paper targets don't work. How many brides wear horizontal striped gowns?
