the thing is that with 380ex there are no settings to choose, it is a very basic flash unit (no manual mode) ... still it is supposed to be fully compatible as are all ex flashes...

the camera settings i wrote in response to Corne Ferreira, for example:

File Name IMG_1990.CR2
Camera Model Canon EOS 1000D
Firmware Firmware Version 1.0.3
Shooting Mode Program AE
Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/200
Av( Aperture Value ) 8.0
Metering Mode Evaluative Metering
Exposure Compensation 0
ISO Speed 400
Lens 12-24mm
Focal Length 18.0mm
Image Size 3888x2592
Image Quality RAW
Flash On
Flash Type External TTL
Flash Exposure Compensation 0
Shutter curtain sync 1st-curtain sync
White Balance Mode Auto
AF Mode One-Shot AF
Picture Style Standard
Sharpness 3
Contrast 0
Saturation 0
Color tone 0
Color Space sRGB
Long exposure noise reduction 0:Off
High ISO speed noise reduction 0:Off
Dust Delete Data No

nothing special there I think... Is the flash not supposed to balance the illumination strength in ttl metering mode?

What you are describing is what I am seeing - as if no ttl is happening?!

I am very confused...

exposure, ISO and aperture are all appropriate for the outdoor setting you use without flash (background properly exposed). Into this the flash seems to fire with full force, as if no TTL metering is happening. Are you sure all settings in flash and camera are correct, flash not set to manual? P should work fine, if the flash is fully compatible with the body it should allow TTL metering.
