In the end, most of us 'cheat' to get the results if we can't do it using the background light. I like the following setup, white sheet and a pair of white dry erase marker boards from the local Lowe's/Home Depot. Sheet takes care of the background, boards serve as a nice flat surface, and provide some reflection.

The seam between the boards can easily be cloned away.

I usually am too cramped for space for the background strobe blowout, so I just use the photoshop method discussed in depth here. Feathering the selection helps soften those edges where the subject meets the background too. Sometimes I even add a very slight gradient consisting of a white to not-exactly-white color to give it more realism, like you can almost see there is something back there. That really depends on your needs of course.
