Yes, the 400/5.6 does take some practice getting used to. Took me several outings, and a lot of reading and practice, but now I find it to be a super sharp lens. Personally, I found that use of a monopod, tripod, or Bush Hawk helped a lot.

The DOF on a long lens is quite thin. If your body sways back to front and you are hand holding, the focus can easily drift from where you intended.
