I beg to differ about the 75-300. Yes it a rather klunky lens with push pull zooming and a strange IS unit but it is capable of taking very sharp photos. I used it for several years before I sold it and bought the 70-300 which is just as sharp with improved IS and is compact which makes it good for travel.

The 75-300 would not be good if it is your only lens and it has a limited field of view. If your looking for a good general purpose lens that will cover most needs on a cropped or full frame camera I recommend the new Canon 40mm "pancake" f/2.8 lens. It's a very good lens at a bargain $200.
