The future of mirrorless
Aug 5, 2012

If one makes a parellel between the timeline it took for DSLRs to mature (around 10 years, from 1998 - the first serious Nikon offers built on Kodak's penetration into the market up until 2008 when we started seeing 5D MKII, D3X which were almost mature products to the current lineup D800, 5DMKIII, 1Dx, D4 which IMO are perfectly mature) and compares it to the M43 or EVILs in general (2006, one of the pioneers was Sony with the now forgotten DSC-R1, was the inception year imo, when it first started for big sensors to appear in bodies lacking the mirror assembly -> evolution that led to the Pen series which evolved into the lineup of the past 2 years that consists of E-P1/Pl1/P2/Pl3/PM1, the panasonic comparative models, the Nex 3/5/5N/F3 ... to the up to date stuff such as OM-D/Nex-7 and their upcoming replacements) one can make an extrapolation of the development of the former and apply an arbitrary estimate that in 4 years time we will start seeing mature EVIL products.

So, what do you think, and I want mature opinions, will a mature EVIL camera look like?

At the moment, here are the highlights across the board:

  • Sony's EVF (1024x768)

  • Olympus OM-Ds (built quality and IBIS)

  • Nikon's (1 series) focusing speed and accuracy (CDAF/PDAF mix)

  • Panasonic's lens compactness with it's retractable lens designs.

IMO, a perfectly mature EVIL camera will have the following:

  • OM-D built quality / looks with perfected sealing. This size, especially at the viewfinder level is crucial in order to house a bigger/better EVF, doubt the Nex-7's housing will be enough to support anything larger than the current EVF.

  • 2880x1800 EVF at 120hz (retina display EVF, will need a bigger housing for it, IMO it should be able to be fitted inside the OM-D style body) ... to put into perspective, current top model EVF in the NEX-7 has 2.34 million dots, but in order to have a perfect rendition of the real world and be able to substitute a mirror, at least 15+ million dot EVF will be needed, perhaps some form of holographic display cube even in order to achieve this.

  • Nikon's focusing, perfected to a level when CDAF/PDAF will be seamlessly blended into one super fast system.

Canon EOS 5D Canon EOS-1D Nikon D3X Nikon D4 Nikon D800 Olympus PEN E-P1 Sony Alpha NEX-7
