"What is meant by manual exposure capabilities?
A camera that has controls for adjusting aperture, shutter speed and ISO.

What do these three things do? http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/camera-exposure.htm The definition of ISO there is technically wrong for digital cameras, but its a close enough approximation for beginners (although some on this board would vehemently disagree).

If you think of a camera as a tool, then the different classes of cameras are simply tools with different capabilities. All can take great pictures. Some just have extra tools for, for example, taking pictures in bad lighting conditions.

I agree that an entry level DSLR would be the best, but if you don't want to spend the money, this micro 4/3rds camera is a very good compromise and the price is right.
