In this case you simply selected the wrong AF-Area mode for the situation. The camera may not have missed focus.

Dunno how you figure that. It looks like front focus, pretty bad, to me. Focus looks to be on the post on the right side, in front of the leg. What AF mode would cause that?

AF-Area mode Auto...His exposure mode appears to to green Auto so I think the AF-Area mode auto was primary. Even if he was in single the sensor would have locked onto the sleeve and not the face.

Prixnobeldefoot, you're going to have to knuckle down and do some controlled tests to see what exactly is going on and then send the camera in for service. You shouldn't have to be concerned about the camera. It's actually a dam good one, when it works. If you're not sure how to do the checks and/or don't have a tripod and other stuff to make the checks easy, just post a new message asking for pointers. It's not that hard to do, just a little time consuming, even without a tripod.

Agreed...would need to see the full pic with EXIF to confirm. If all pics are coming out like this, he needs to test focus. Then determine if there might be a problem.
This scene can't really be used to determine any malfunction.
