Stating the obvious but, after a new instruction on the master, always complete the task by pressing 'set'.

Any master instruction, whether related to mode, FEC, or power output only actually reaches the slave with the next outgoing master pre-flash.

Re power increments on a 550Ex. The minimum native M power increment on a 550Ex is whole stops. Its screen cannot display any lesser M power increment. But the good news is that its Xenon tube can be modulated in 1/3rd stop increments - both under ETTL (maybe finer under ETTL) and under M flash (but for M flash, only when acting as a slave, and, if being driven by a 1/3rd stop capable 580 master, like yours). IOW as a slave in M flash, a 550Ex cannot always display on its screen what its tube is in fact delivering.
