SZ-30MR and a Recycled Tele-Converter
Aug 3, 2012

After my initial success with attaching my 15-year-old 1.7x tele-converter to the SZ-30MR, I decided to improve the fitting of my, also recycled, CLA-4 adaptor. The main material are laminating sleeves. They were put through the heated rollers of a laminator, without any prints inside them. The laminated sheets were cut into strips and then wound around the CLA-4 adaptor. The width of the strips is slightly wider than the lens extends on the SZ-30MR.

I have laminated pictures that show no deterioration after ten years, so the laminate is not a problem. But I built up the tube using cellu-tape to hold them together - and the glue on cellu-tape has been found to dry out. So I re-made the tube using drops of super-glue, with the cellu-tape intended as a temporary fastener. Instead of making the push-fit outer tube just one laminate thick, I used two for long-term reliability, and generally paid more attention to the precision of my construction.

The (new) picture shows the B-300 with its newly modified CLA-4 adaptor beside the SZ-30MR with the lens fully extended -

I made sure that the outer push-fit tube is tightly wound, so the weight of the B-300 does not pull the assembly off the lens flange on the SZ-30MR. Then I spent some money for a yard of black sticky vynil, and wound a strip of that round my modified lens adaptor -

Now this test object was chosen because it will show up chromatic aberration -

CA is definitley there, but I tolerated worse on my SP-550UZ until a firmware update solved THAT problem.

There is also another moon shot -

PS I used my Stylus 9010 to take the shots of the SZ-30MR. It just so happens that the SZ-31MR iHS has a very simlar button layout on the back. The movie button has wider spacing with the view button, which makes me less accident-prone.
