IMO, it is rather lacking for sports/action shooting mainly because of the limited FPS and small buffer and the consumer AF module. But, I've been using the d300 and d700 for shooting sports, for several years. I added a d3s to my kit, at the same time I purchased the d7000, in Feb this year.

The differences in FPS and buffer size, from the d7k to the d300 and d700, is rather dramatic. If you're accustomed to shooting long bursts, it's easy to fill up the buffer on the d7k which pretty much shuts down the FPS to about 1 FPS or so.

The OP is not shooting RAW so FPS is not an issue (OP is shooting JPEG only)
