I recently returned from a photography trip to Scotland. Occasionally during the trip I had noticed that the IS didn't sound quite right on my 24-105L. When I got home and examined the images in detail on a large high res monitor, I found that some of the images taken with that lens were soft. They were OK for smaller prints but large prints were out of the question for those images. A lot of the images had a sufficiently high shutter speed that they should have been sharp whether IS was on or off. I was using the lens with a 5DM3. I sent it in to Canon's NJ facility for repair expecting a very expensive IS related repair.

The quote and subsequent repair cost was $189. When I got it back the documentation said that the lens was "focusing in error" and that they adjusted the front focus, back focus, and "tilt" focus returning the lens to factory specifications. No parts were mentioned as required in the work. I've never hear of the "tilt" focus of a lens. Maybe it has something to do specifically with IS. In any event, the lens seems to be performing (and sounding) correctly now.
