If you don't mind all-manual focus (read: either convert to split prism and practice a lot, OR use live view all the time, either are perfectly viable techniques) you might also want to consider the Contax Zeiss Planar 1,4/50 (~$250-300 used) OR 1,7/50 ($100 used) depending on your needs. Add $20 for a Contax-EOS adapter or $50 if you're really picky about those "no-play" adapters.

I mention this option only because for roughly the same amount of money as the Canon 1.4 or 1.8, respectively, you get a lens with basically equally good optics but whose build quality will last you a lifetime. You lose autofocus, though, so that's the tradeoff.

The Canon 1.8 and 1.4 are fantastic lenses, but you WILL spend on repairs, eventually.
