Others, however, believe without evidence. For example, I've not seen the evidence that the Andromeda Galaxy (M31 or NGC 224) is 2.5 million light years away, but I trust that those who came up with the figure are not lying, incompetent, or making an honest mistake.

That said, if I performed the measurements myself and found the figure to be different than what I was told, I would have doubts (mainly in my calculations, of course!).
