I initially thought the AF would function just as well as you see in consumer HD video cameras, but it appears not. Why is this? Is it simply a function of smaller sensors on consumer video cameras creating a generally larger DOF and the focus hunting is simply less (or not) noticeable?

Yes, in part. Smaller sensor with a much shorter focal length means deeper DoF. So that will cover a host of focus issues as the image will likely stay withing the DoF range. But also much smaller, lighter lenses, which can be AF'd quicker than the larger heavier lenses needed for an APS sensor.

This is why I do not recommend continuous video AF for large sensored cameras. The focus hunting is far too noticable.
