Does NEF File store the original File Name?

I ask because I had a drive failure on one of my external archives and while I was able to recover almost 100% of the files (from the count), all files are named sequentially from 1 to over 5000 ... for example:

00000001.NEF
00000427.NEF

etc. etc.

I can find images via Bridge by sorting and filtering by some of the meta data like date and time original, etc.

But, Lightroom is looking for File Name it will take me forever to try and rename them manually. I was looking for the IMAGE COUNTER and seeing if that was an option to try and rename the files intelligently given the file frame number.

But, I can;t find that via Bridge or Lightroom.. only Photoshop or external tools.

Anyhow, does Nikon store the filename it gives the image on the CF/SD card upon capture in the NEF?
