I have tested the D300, D7000, and D800 using my 85mm f1.4G. Yep. Some lenses simply do not let in enough light, especially with DX bodies. Hence, real problems focusing. Use a 85mm f1.4. No problem. Now throw on a 16-85 at 85mm and f5.6. Big problem.

I agree that many consumer grade zoom lenses will have trouble. Isn't the issue more a matter of f5.6, the limit for AF? I think that limit is mentioned in the manual. And one of the improvements in Advanced CAM3500 is that the limit is now f8. Which may explain the new wave of inexpensive FX lenses announced by Nikon.
