600EX AF-assist beam worse on 5DIII (1DX) than 7D

Each Canon flash can project horizontal or vertical beam lines. Vertical ones are stronger and are projected when AF system is set to single center AF point.

When I put any speedlite on 7D it projects vertical AF-assist beam. When I put same flash gun on 5DIII it projects only horizontal lines which are much weaker. So when I shoot a wedding in a really dim location I can lock focus on 7D much faster. It takes much longer to 5DIII. 7D is instant. I need to wait 3-5 seconds with 5DIII in my hands. It is so frustrating. In these particular situations 5DIII seems like garbage to me. And it all is because of missing vertical AF-assist beam.

I just talked to 3 Canon Customer Service Reps over the phone (including supervisor). They explain that this is how the new system works. One of them promised to report it to Canon engineers and maybe next firmware update will change it. I don’t know if this is an error or maybe Canon just think the new AF system is so good that it doesn’t need stronger vertical beams. Unfortunately IT DOES.

What is your experience? Does a flash on your 5DIII (1DX may have the same problem) project vertical beams?

I have 5D Mark III and 7D. I also have 600EX-RT and 580EX-II. I tried all possible combinations. I have the same settings on both systems (Manual exposure and ISO, single center AF point, ETTL).
