Put the camera in continuous autofocus, then just use the AF/MF selector button to turn on/off AF as needed. When toggled to MF, it will stay put; and when you toggle back to continuous AF, it will smoothly refocus to your targeted AF zone.
Last week was the first time I tried to use video on my NEX-7 for action-shots of people - at the annual Highland Games held nearby.
Frustrating for all the things I hadn't turned OFF while shooting scenic movies:
1. Face-detection focus was ON, so as I tried to record hammer throw or caber toss there would -frequently- be someone in the crowd - in the foreground of the video - who would turn to look-back over their shoulder = a white rectangle would appear around their face, and the camera would focus on them until they faced forward again.
2. MF/AF was still set to "Hold", so it would only stay in MF while I held the button in the center of the switch depressed...
As soon as I got home, I checked the manual to make sure I knew how to turn OFF Face Detection focus, and set MF to "toggle" - so it will stay in MF until I press the button a 2nd time.
