I'm in the same boat. I'm starting to get more and more paid gig requests and I really want a 2nd/new body and keep my older d300 as a backup but I haven't made enough to justify a $3300 D800 purchase + FF lenses. Using it as a DX camera seems stupid.

My D300 is in perfect working order, and in good light still shines, but doing events in low light you really start to see it's age. While I understand I need a D800/D4 to do ISO6400 shots cleanly it would be great to hit at least ISO 800-1600 with relatively clean RAW images to start with. My D300 is noisy at 800.

Maybe not on handling and speed but probably yes on IQ ;-). But thinking out loud if I'm cropping into a D800 that hard, I already own that in a D7000! So no free lunch no matter which way I turn.
