Puzzling 30D / 580EXII Problem

Thanks again for everyone's suggestions. It's certainly possibly my hot shoe/contacts might be loose, I'll check that as well. Thankfully though I am diligent about locking the flash down when I mount it - I'm slightly surprised to hear that it will work at all if it isn't locked !
