LOL, donĀ“t even think about 24-120 if you want the ultimate image quality on your D800 - 24-120 is clearly a level below 70-200/2.8 vr II. And obviously you would never get the beautiful subject isolation, i.e. shallow depth of field (120/f4 vs. 200/2.8).

That message above is a stupid recommendation indeed.
