You don't have to use M mode

On a Panasonic, put your camera to M mode, activate Constant Preview, set the aperture and adjust shutter speed with the Control Wheel. It's dead simple.

Just a quick FYI for 2eyesee, aperture priority mode will work fine with manual lenses (set the aperture on the lens and the camera does shutter/iso automatically), you don't have to use manual exposure mode if you don't want to.
