Somehow after using the lens for a few hours today and after switching it between my D5100 and D3s a few times the jumping/shifting VC issue has completely disappeared. Now when the VC engages I see almost no shift in the image, similar to what I see on the Nikon/Canon VR/IS implementations. Even better, the VC performance is now drastically improved. One of those floating VC elements must have needed a little nudge Sadly the aperture problem remains, but that I can work around for now. At least I know the VC on the model in general is not hopeless; the aperture problem can surely be fixed by swapping out my copy or at worst, getting my copy fixed.
