Thanks for the warning and I tested my copy in brief and can say that there is a 1EV difference between f2.8 and f4 as it is supposed to be. I was able to confirm that also in the histogram and I tested on a D800 in full-frame and 1.5 crop-mode (because you observed that on the 5100) although I think the later does not matter.

I'm happy with the lens but initially thought that the VC was defect because it was different from what I knew from Nikon. It was somehow less obvious but from what I've seen right now (I have this lens now 3 weeks) it yet effective.

Haven't done any real lab testing but shot roughly about 1000 pictures in the field. The only thing I might complain are the centric bokeh circles if you pixel peep, the image impression itself is good and not nervous in critical bokeh situations.
