I'm holding my purchase until the situation will be clear. It's really an appealing camera, but I have no time to deal with a defective sample, and one costing 3000 € / USD.

Today we don't know how many cameras are affected and whether the new ones are problem free, because Nikon is keeping their mouths shut.

Add that the fix is not assured, and there are still reports of cameras going back and forth Nikon service, to no avail.

Mansurovs estimated that as many as half of the cameras are affected:

As many as half of the units that I have tested and received reports on thus far have a very noticeable asymmetric AF problem on the left side. To me it looks like very few units do not have a problem – most have very noticeable to somewhat noticeable focus errors. So as far I am concerned, I can confirm that the asymmetric focus issue indeed does exist on many D800 DSLRs cameras

Thom issued a "not recommended":

Unfortunately, at the moment there are enough reports of left AF sensor problems with brand new cameras that I can't recommend the D800 until it is clear that the factory has completly solved that issue.

Now make your choice.
