I took a gamble and ordered Kenko's variable NDX filter.
For the trip I am taking a variable will be much more usable.
I've gotten the filter now and while I haven't tried it yet, the build quality seems very high. The turning motion is very fluid, almost like its on ball bearings, so I'm hoping the image quality will reflect the build quality.

No problem! Which ones are you going to get? I have 2-stop and 3-stop Singh-Ray's and I find myself reaching for the 3-stop soft/hard filters pretty much 95% of the time.
