I just noticed that I used the 45/1.8 to check this, so A mode tries to maintain 1/ 2xfocal length here and will change ISO accordingly in order to maintain that exposure time. Sorry for the confusion, but still something to consider when you want to make EC affect ISO rather than aperture/time.

In the sports examples mentioned by Acahaya you would then not use M mode, but instead use A mode and set fast(er) exposure times via Sync Flash setting to force the camera into changing (Auto) ISO when EC is used. All more awkward than just getting EC in M mode, but better some workaround than nothing.

Of course then there is the caveat of being limited to 1/250 minimum shutter speed (sync limit), which for sports may be quite too long. Out of options here.
