using chdk on sx40

Same problem with my SX220, the CHDK will load up, but I can not get a menu to show anywhere, only the battery strength indicator and nothing more. I downloaded the version that matched what the camera firmware was, but no matter what I do, CHDK just does not work. I even tried the basic version and finally got the CHDK folders to show, but no menus. It does seem to kill the battery power awful fast using CHDK, but so far no success for me using CHDK either.
