I've had the 40D for some time now. It's finally passed onto family members as it has been replaced by the 7D and 50D. The 40D has far better focus reliability especially with pro lenses, really quick to focus. The drawback is the ISO range is limited to 3200, If this is a consideration move up to the 50D, not sure where your budget is. As mentioned earlier that the body for the 40D is not plastic, it feels like a solid camera in you hands. I've picked up a rebel XSI it just feels like a fragile toy in my hands. Also if you do consider the 50D you can run magic lantern and have the ability to shoot video and other goodies provided. Good luck, either way you'll enjoy whatever camera you decide.
