Nikon 180mm f/2.8D / 300f4 on d800

looking for opinions between the two lenses

Nikon 180mm f/2.8D and 300mm f4 as to factors of overall sharpness and clarity of images captured when used on d800/e

i had a 300mm for a month - and i guess i expected more from it... or maybe i was not using it well, images did not seem all that sharp or colorful...

many thanks for any thoughts on this combo (180mm)
