How to autofocus precisely on portraits?

I agree, d7000 is not good for manual focus. Actually i'm thinking on getting a focusing screen for it, that could solve the problem for sure. But would be great to figure out a more precise way of using auto focus.

In Live View you mean to use face recognition? Honestly i'm not a huge fan of the lcd.

Because the D7000 is far more accurate using AF than manual focus unless you replace the focusing screen (In general terms using the viewfinder). If you have time though, Live View focus is perfect each and every time. I actually find PDAF AF accuracy better in the D7000 than any previous Nikon at this price point (regards portrait work). You can do it manually but it takes good light, a good eye, and time.
