Diffraction error
Jul 27, 2012

Can someone explain diffraction error in a nutshell?

I know it is supposed to start to become obvious at smaller aperture settings , let’s say a higher number than F16.

What exactly is it that you see? Does the image just become slightly softer or is it a different type of artifact that becomes visible?

Does it depend on pixel density ?

If yes, would that mean that 2 different DX cameras, one with say 12M pixels and one with 24M pixels, that the error would start at different F numbers, for the same lens?

Does diffraction error also depend on the focal length in any way?

Is it also a design influenced “feature” where the lens designer can make it more or less ,at the cost of other features?

Many Thanks
