Or it could be a duff lens! It should be way better than a 24-105!

The camera changing the aperture to f5.6 (after your manually focused) will ever so slightly move the focal plane. Different lenses have different focal plane curvatures, so some lenses will be affected more than others.

The problem you have is that your focal plane is too close to the camera.
I would go out and take some landscapes at f11 side by side and then compare.
