Advice on portrait lens needed - 85/1.8 or 70-200/2.8 ?
Jul 26, 2012

Hi all,

I need a "portrait" lens to document my wife's pregnancy properly I was planning on getting the 85/1.8, but since I also need more decent tele glass I'm considering getting the 70-200/2.8 and use this for portraits. Unfortunately, I can't justify getting both at the moment.

Does anyone have experience with the 70-200/2.8 for portraiture? How does the resolution, contrast and bokeh compare to the 85/1.8? Since I will be shooting whole body "portraits" mainly, I will really only be needing the short end of the zoom. I do have the non-AFS 50/1.4 when even more angle is needed.

Tips and suggestions would be welcome. As mentioned, my immediate needs are portraiture first and foremost, a little more reach comes secondly. I don't see a big advantage with the slightly bigger max aperture of the 85/1.8, but I might be wrong. Possibly I'm just trying to justify buying the 70-200/2.8

Cheers,
Andreas
